Hilos is the first woven piece created for the TNM project,

Weaving-Nature-Music, to honor nature by connecting the primitive arts

of the world; weaving and music.

Mother Earth and the universe are the starting point for every

thing, and nature is at the heart of all creations. For thousands of

years, weaving and music have been forms of expression used to

honor nature.

Protecting our environment is a true and vital battle. As part of

that battle, Hilos is more than just a woven and musical work of

art. It is an instrument for shedding light on a painful subject: the

deforestation of Venezuela’s Amazonian region, extinction of its

indigenous peoples and loss of their culture.

Artistically speaking, music is a universal language, and so is

weaving. Analysis of these two artforms leads us to similar con

clusions. For Hilos, Manuel Rangel followed the mathematical

framework of the warp and weft when creating notes, melodies,

and entire arrangements. He also recorded the sound of Nadine’s

loom, which she calls Jack. The warmth of color in the materials

chosen reveals the diversity and richness of the earth’s flora and

fauna.
